Girl Cagers Split Four

Girls' basketball for 1979 has begun and so far Mrs. Helaine Cohen, coach of JV's and Mr. Les Jannusch, coach of the varsity, have led their teams through four games. The standings for these games are varsity 2‑2, and JV 1‑3.

On Dec. 19 the teams lost to York varsity, 39‑37, and JV 43‑15. On Jan. 4 the varsity was victorious against Elk Grove, 66‑61, but the JV lost, 20‑19. Both teams were downed by Deerfield varsity, 61‑43, and JV, 22‑19. Then, on Jan. 11, the Warriors played New Trier West and were successful, varsity, 43‑41, and JV, 30‑8.

The varsity team this year is made up of Heide Jung, Lori Cole, Nancy Monohan, Debbie Molinaro, Wendy Winkleman, Debbie Mineke, Bev Schick, Jeanne Tortorelli, Marji Horejs, Doreen DeRosa, Donna Logisz, and

Debbie Lindeman. The returning players are Wendy Winkleman, Debbie Mienke, and Margie Horejs. New players are Debbie Lindeman and Donna Logisz.

The JV players are Kim Bobek, Diane Grooms, Lynn McCabe, Betty Olen, Deanne Richmeier, Kim Stryker, Karen Sherwood, Carol Stube, Karen Wall, Kathy Waters, Julie Degrenier, and Lori Bitter.

The girls work hard, and on the days there is not a game they practice two hours after schools. Coach Jannusch commented about the team, "It is a young team, and I think we will get better as the season goes on." Coach Cohen said, "For being almost all freshmen and having a new coach, progress is being made."
