On Friday, Feb. 23, several Maine West students were recognized for their outstanding performances in the speech and music areas. These students qualified for the state competitition by winning in the local district competititions.
At Maine West on Saturday, Feb. 3, the Maine West Individual Events contestants from Maine West performed. In eight of the 11 categories Maine West contestants advanced to sectional competition.
Maine West students traveling to Downers Grove South on Saturday, Feb. 3, were as follows: Yvonne Pytlik for extemporaneous speaking, Judy Rompf in dramatic interpretation, and Sheila Nelson in humorous interpretation. Others were Mark Halverson for radio speaking, Kathleen Bashem for prose reading and verse reading, Sheila Wall in original comedy alone and in humorous duet acting with Julie Farrell.
Two of the Maine West students who advanced to sectional competition also advanced to the state finals. They include: Kathleen Bashem for prose reader and Yvonne Pytlik for extemporaneous speaker. The championship competition was held at Bloomington on Saturday, Feb. 17.
In team totals Maine West took second as they had earlier this year. Fenton took first, advancing 10 to sectionals Oak Park was third with four students advancing to sectionals.

In the Music Department, several students also qualified for state competition. They qualified in two different areas. The first was orchestra and the second was choir. The following students qualified for the state festival at the district festival which was held at Maine West Nov. 11.
The All‑State Music Festival was held at the Conrad Hilton Hotel in Chicago on Jan. 25‑28. In orchestra, two Maine West students qualified for state competition out of 125 district finalists. These two Maine West students are Rhonda Hotop and Meg Swensen.
The Maine West Concert Choir also sent 7 district finalists to the district competition. Thirty‑five high schools were involved in the competition. Out of 250 choir competitors from various schools in this district, 36 were qualified with two from Maine West. They are Marty Pazdioch and Yvonne Pytlik. They were judged on their tonal quality, preparation, sight reading, and tonal memory.
In addition to these awards the Maine Speech Team would like to thank several Maine West personnel without whom they could not have functioned efficiently: Ms. Mariann Guyon, Mr. Robert Norris, Mr. Daryl Schultz, Ms. Cynthia Schaulis, Mr. Eldon Burk, and the speech students who worked with the tournament manager, Mr. Ronald Mills.
