Wanton Destruction Must Not Continue

Man, is it cold! I wish that the bus would get here! Many lines such as these can be heard from the many students who ride the bus to and from school each day. For most of these students, the bus is the only form of transportation available to get them to and from school.

Nortran, the company that provides the bus service for Maine West, has been and still is considering cancelling some of the routes that serve our students. On certain routes a few students have been, without cause, destroying the buses. Many windows have been broken, seats have been destroyed, and litter has been left all around. A few students' actions, yelling and throwing things, have been making the driving much more difficult. With the conditions of the roads, the driving is difficult enough without the distractions of a few rowdy students. Nothing is wrong with being rowdy, but a bus is not the time or place.

The unspoken rule for many years has been watch out for yourself; worry only about what directly affects each of us personally. The problems that have been experienced on the bus routes affects all of us. It is time, however difficult and unpopular it may be, to do something in an attempt to put an end to the damage done to the buses. It seems almost absurd to let the actions of a few, the definite minority who find it funny to ruin a bus, create a situation that could mean trouble for so many. If Nortran truly does cancel routes, all of us will pay the price because of the actions of a few.

It is time to do something. Going against society is never easy but in this case very necessary. We should not be made to pay for the actions of a few. We must report any instances of damage on the buses. If this wanton destruction is allowed to continue, we all will pay the price.
