Cagers Finally Get Going

The Warrior basketball team clinched four more victories as their season rapidly draws to a close. However, six defeats were also accumulated, bringing their record to 6‑16.

Waukegan West defeated the Warrior team, 62‑60, in a very heated battle. Maine led most of the way only to slip in the final quarter with Waukegan scoring a basket in the final seconds to put the game into overtime. Neither team could capitalize much in the overtime, but Waukegan came out ahead to win. Tim Richardson led West with 24 points. Maine South was next to down the cagers, 84‑70. The state‑ranked Hawks dominated the game early and never lost their lead. Craig Gustafsson had an extremely impressive performance, scoring a season high 28 points.

Victory was finally had by Maine West when the team came from behind to defeat Lake Park, 63‑60. Trailing throughout the whole game, West finally wore the Lancers down to win in the final minutes of the game. Jim Schultz scored 24 to lead the team. Waukegan East was not so generous, defeating Maine, 63‑57. Schultz, Gustafsson, and Chip Holler all scored in double figures getting 15, 13, and 12 points respectively.

The Warriors then defeated Highland Park, 57-46. The team dominated throughout the game while demonstrating great teamwork, with all eight players who got in the game scoring. Glenbrook North then defeated the Warriors, 55-47. Richardson led

West with 15 points. It was then West's turn to manhandle the opponent, destroying Glenbrook South, 67-57. The Warriors took the lead at the start and never lost it. Gustafsson hit for 21 as Richardson and Schultz got 17 and 14.

Revenge was attained as West beat Waukegan East, 59-47. East had won a contest between the two earlier in the year. West jumped to an early lead and held onto it to gain the victory. Gustafsson was once again high as he scored 13 points to lead the team. Maine East broke the Warrior's winning streak as they acquired a 73‑63 victory. After falling behind and staying there, West attempted one of their patented last quarter comebacks. This one, however, fell much short. The team outscored East, 27‑18, in the fourth quarter, but the Demons held on to win.

In a position for an upset, West then faced state powerhouse Maine South on the Maine West court. South appeared to have the game well in hand as they used the fast break to easily open a 39‑28 halftime lead. This is when the home fans seemed to help the team. Their loud cheering appeared to incite the already psyched‑up Maine West team. Fantastic defense shut down the South offensive game completely in the second half. The Warriors pulled to within a basket and had possession of the ball. West was unable to capitalize, and South barely held on to win. Gustafsson scored 16 points while guard Steve Zilliox demonstrated superb dribbling and passing skills to lead West to a near upset.
