"Wow, I really wish I had been able to participate in the musical." "I really would like to participate in that club, if only I had the time." What is the reason that these lines are heard so frequently around Maine West? The answer to that question is easy ‑ part time jobs. Many of today's students rather than participating in school activities, feel the need or desire to spend their free time working.
For many the reason for working is to pay for the college education that follows for most students. In many cases working cannot be avoided, but it also does not have to mean the exclusion of involvement in extra‑curricular and school activities.

participation in activities and classes, many decide what they would like to study in college or do with their lives after high school.
Working does not have to mean the total exclusion of activities. Many clubs and organizations meet at times other than after school. Many employers are also very helpful to all who wish to participate in school activities. Many will allow students a leave of absence. This time off will allow the student the hours off to participate in the acitivity of their choice. Many employers are also willing to change hours and fix schedules to meet students' needs. They too realize the importance of involvement and participation in school activities.
Working for most of us may be necessary, but let's not exclude school activities because of work. It is possible to do both, so next time try out for the musical, join the club or organization‑take the time, get involved!
