This year's girls' gymnastics team has been consistently getting better throughout the entire season. On Mar. 3 the varsity squad lost to Glenbrook North by the score of 85.60 to 91.20.
Kim Kratz in vaulting, Colleen Monahan on the uneven bars, Nancy Howard on the balance beam, and Barb Rieck in the floor exercise were high scorers for Maine West. The JV team also lost; the score was Glenbrook North 57.00, Maine West 45.50.
The teams' next competition was a tri‑ with Highland Park and Niles North. Maine West finished second only .10 behind Highland Park. Kim Kratz, Colleen Monahan, Barb Rieck, and Dianna Dalenberg all turned in excellent performances.
Waukegan East was Maine West's next opposition, this meet taking place on Mar. 14. On the varsity level the Maine West squad recorded an overwhelming victory, 91.20‑52.25. Again it was Kim Kratz and Dianna Dalenberg with the highest scores. The JV team also won; the score was 52.05 to 42.00. Outstanding performances were turned in by Molly Sherkey, on both the uneven bars and the balance beam, and Tammy Burlakow in the floor exercise.

Kim Kratz holds the highest average on the varsity squad this year. Kim has been able to obtain an average of above 8.0 in valuting throughout the entire season. Mrs. Judy Beck, the girl's gymnastics coach, commented about the team as a whole. "I am very happy with the way the team is progressing. From the beginning of the year till now, midpoint, the team's improvement has been tremendous."
The gymnastics team will be competing in the Niles West Invitational tomorrow beginning at 7 p.m. Competing will be 32 of the top teams in the state. For Maine West, Kim Kratz and Dianna Dalenberg will be vaulting, Dianna Dalenberg and Colleen Monahan will be on the uneven bars, Barb Rieck and Heidi Schlatter will be on the balance beam, and Barb Rieck and Dianna Dalenberg will be doing floor exercise. The invitational offers an excellent opportunity for everyone to see the finest girl gymnasts in the state.
