MW Music Department Hosts 1981 May Music Festival |
||||||||||
| The Maine West Music Department is once again hosting a May Music Festival. This year, however, the festival is taking place on two nights instead of one. Last night, Thursday, May 14, the Concert Band, Combined CadetIntermediate Bands, and the winners of the Solo-Ensemble Recital Competition performed. Tonight Chorus I, Combined Chorus II and III, and Concert Choir, Concert Orchestra, and the solos will perform. The show last night was in the auditorium at 8 p.m., as the concert tonight will be. The Solo-Ensemble winners were chosen from among many music department students who competed at the Avenues of the Arts held at Maine West on Friday, May 1. Each student was judged on his or her musical ability and style. The winners performing on both nights of the May Festival include Mark Rohrbein '81 on trumpet, Kevin Ilker '82 on violin, Colleen Kott '83 on piano, and Amy Stoneburner '82 singing soprano. Performing last night only was John Katzbeck '82 on alto saxophone. The Concert Band, under the direction of Mr. Paul Magnusson, provided the audience with a wide array of selections, including "Holiday for Winds" by Osser and Vaughan-Williams' "Folk song Suite." The finale of the Concert Band's program was the "Walt Disney Overture" |
(Erickson, arranger). This music provided the accompaniment for a slide presentation of the West Warrior Marching Band's trip to Orlando, Florida on spring vacation, which included performances in the Walt Disney World parade and a concert at Lake Buena Vista. Mr. Magnusson also directed the Combined Cadet-Intermediate Bands. These students presented "Air for the G String" by John Cacavas and "Rhumba Sincopada" by Ployhar, as well as other fine arrangements. Tonight, the choruses, under the direction of Mr. Donald Lord, will perform. Mixed Chorus I will sing "Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring" by Bach. They will be followed by Mixed Chorus II and III, performing "Prayer" from "Hansel and Gretel," as well as a selection from the cantata, "Sleeper's Wake." Concluding the choral section of the program will be the Concert Choir. This group will perform "Commuter Blues" by Ray Charles and "Sally and Her Lover" (Appalachian Folk Tune and Poem), as well as other pieces. Concluding the 1981 May Music Festival will be the Concert Orchestra, directed by Mr. Francis Vaupel. The orchestra will perform "Romanian Rhapsody #1," by Georges Enrico, Shubert's "Symphony in B Minor" (Unfinished), and "Wildwood Flower." |
