Maine West Netmen Charge Towards State

The Maine West varsity tennis team now has a record of 11 wins and 2 losses, losing only to Glenbrook North, who has four nationally ranked players and last year's defending state singles champion, and to Highland park on Tues., May 5.

At the Arlington Invitational on Apr. 24 and 25, Mike Muldowney and George Reichl, playing first doubles, won against Maine East in their first round and lost to Bloomington in their second. In their feedback, they played Prospect High, coming out victorious. They then played Oak Park-River Forest, finishing in tenth place out of a 32-team invite, including some of the best players in the state.

Also at the Arlington Invite, Jim Weiss and John Nickerson, at second doubles, beat Elk Grove in straight sets and lost to Barrington, the eventual champions. In their feedback, they played Maine South and won in three sets, 2-6, 6-0, and 6-2. Next, the Warrior doubles team played Hinsdale Central and lost in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, and 0-6. Weiss and Nickerson finished in a surprising eighth place.

Jim Postol, commanding first singles, lost to Mark Van Sant from Elk Grove in his first round and also lost to Jeff Harlow of Lake Forest. Jim Roy, at second singles, lost his first match to Oak Park - River
Forest, was victorious in his second and third matches, and lost his fourth match, thus placing him in the lower sixteen places.

At the Libertyville Dual Meet here at Maine West on Apr. 27, the Warrior varsity team was victorious with a final team score of 7-6. On Friday May 1, Maine West traveled to Fenton. Maine West won by a score of five wins for Maine West and zero wins for Fenton.

On May 5 the Warrior varsity team suffered its second loss to Highland Park by a team score of 4-1. The only victorious warrior was Reichl. The next day, May 6, Maine West traveled to Maine East, where Maine West pulled it off with a final of 3-2. Muldowney, positioned at first singles, upset Monty Oppenheim in straight sets, 6-2, and 6-4. Postol, playing second singles, beat Dave Gurolnic, and Reichl at third singles, suffered his first conference loss in straight sets to Maine East's Dave Rosen. Weiss and Nickerson, playing second doubles, won the meet for Maine West by beating Maine Easts' Mike Weiss and Chris Roth with a score of 3-6 in the first set, 7-6 in the second set, winning the tie-breaker 7-0, and then going on to win the third set, 6-4. Partridge and Walker, the second doubles players, lost in straight sets.
