Girls' Softball Team Concludes With Victory

The Maine West varsity softball team played in a tournament at Niles West on Fri., May 1 and Sat., May 2. The girls took seventh place out of eight.

The first game took place on Fri. against Niles West. Maine West lost to Niles West, which entitled Maine West to play Glenbrook North. North defeated West 11-7. Michelle Fang doubled along with Nancy Sperling, Diane Fillipp, and Cyndi Sniezeks, but singles just weren't enough to nab the win.

In the second game, West defeated Lake Forest 15-9. Sperling was the winning pitcher. Karin Clausen came in at the bottom of the fifth for the save. Clausen struck out the last batter to finish the game.

Maine West traveled to Glenbrook North for a conference game Apr. 27. West pocketed the game with the score of 6-5. Clausen came in to pitch the seventh inning for the save. She pitched two strikeouts to end the game. Thursday, Apr. 30 the Warriors again traveled away to New Trier West for another conference game.
Maine West battled to the very end and nabbed the win from New Trier 14-8. In the sixth inning, Maine West was losing by two runs. At the top of the seventh, the Warriors got two runs to tie the score 8-8. At the top of the eighth, Maine West scored six runs to win. Diane Fillipp booted a double in the eighth inning to add to the final score. Sperling was the winning pitcher.

On May 5 Maine West hosted Waukegan East in a conference game. West lost 14-4. Only five innings were played due to the slaughter rule. Thursday, May 7 West hosted Maine East for another conference game. Mary Just's homerun and Doreen Fillipp's, Betty Olen's, Christy Arnold's and Fang's singles weren't enough for West to win. The girls lost 11-4 after playing a tight defense throughout the game. Friday, May 8 Highland Park traveled to Maine West for West's last conference game. The Warriors took the victory from Highland Park by scoring eight runs to their three. Sperling was the winning pitcher for West. The girls play in a regional game today, May 15. The varsity ended their season with a conference record of 3-3.
