Warrior Baseball Team Edged Out by Maine North |
||||||||||
| The Maine West varsity baseball team finished its season by losing to Maine North with a score of 8-7 in nine innings, thus losing the Maine West Regional play of the Illinois High School Association baseball meet. Before the regional state meet held at Maine North, Coach Al Carstens, varsity baseball coach said, "We're going with our best people, so we have no excuses. We have played well, so that should bring us into the Maine North game the way we want to be. Inexperience is still hurting us; we had too many big shoes to fill, but the kids have never given up in any game. They sure don't quit." The big shoes that Mr. Carstens was referring to were those of Jim Lindeman, Randy Ross, Cesar Suearez, Joe Spiewak, and Frank Smith. The team put up a battle as the meet went into nine innings, Maine West losing by a single run. |
The Warriors concluded regular season play with a 3-0 victory over Glenbrook North here at Maine West. Ken Edwards earned the shutout victory on the mound. That win leaves West with a 12-10 overall win-loss record and a final 7-5 mark in the Central Suburban League South Divison for a twoway tie for second place with Glenbrook South. Maine West edged the Titans on May 22 here at home with final a score of 6-5 on a seventh inning run-scoring double by Jim Carroll that pushed across Dave Matkovic. Carroll also hit a triple in the game credited to Titan pitcher, Jim Kyrkopollos. After the loss to Maine North, Coach Carstens said, "We had a fair season. However, inexperience was against us after losing five of our star players from last year. Next year should be much better." |
