||||||||||
| The Maine West varsity tennis team had an impressive year with the four returning lettermen George Reichl, Mike Muldowney, Jim Weiss, and Jim Postol. George Reichl finished the season with a record 30 wins. At the district meet at Maine South on May 16, Maine West came in second place behind Maine South. At districts, Jim Postol, playing singles and seeded second, beat Maine South's Lemmersol in the first round, Pasik in the second round, and a player from Addison Trail in his third round. Postol lost to Dave Clark of Maine South, who eventually finished in first place. Jim took second place behind Clark. Jim Roy, also playing singles, lost to Robinson of Addison Trail, thus disqualifying Roy from the finals of the district meet. Mike Muldowney and George Reichl, commanding the Warrior's doubles, beat Elk Grove and Addison Trail in their first and second rounds, defeated George and Meakland from Maine South in their third round, and lost to Passinaw and Clark from Maine South who took over first place. Muldowney and Reichl finished behind Passinaw and Clark in second place. |
Jim Weiss and John Nickerson, also positioned at doubles in a fourth seed, beat Holy Cross in their first round but lost to the third-seeded team of Steve Sieboldt and Mark Van Sant of Elk Grove in their second round. Sieboldt and Van Sant came in third place, as Weiss and Nickerson finished in fifth. At the state meet held at Arlington High School on May 21, 22 and 23, Jim Postol at singles and Mike Muldowney and George Reichl at doubles were the only Warrior qualifiers. In Jim Postotl's first round, he lost to Todd Seltzer from New Trier East with a score of 6-4, 6-4. In his second round, he lost to Fernando Ruiz from Springfield with a final of 6-1, 6-1. In Reichl and Muldowney's first round, they beat a doubles team from Effingham, and in their third round they lost to Chris Williams and Jimmy Whitney from Hinsdale Central who finished in fourth place. The team looks forward to next year's season with returning letterman, Jim Postol. |
