Warrior Marching Band Competes in Music Bowl |
||||||||||
| The Maine West Warrior Marching Band participated in Music Bowl I - Illinois. This band competition was held at Soldier Field on Sept. 27. Music Bowl is a contemporary music program designed to provide financial aid to high school music departments, as well as to charities. Music Bowl is sponsored by Beatrice Foods Co. as a program to help create interest and participation in high school marching bands. There were 34 bands participating in this event. Regarding the West Warrior Band's performance, Mr. Paul Magnusson, the band's director, commented, "I'm proud of our band. They did a credible job. As far as I'm concerned, every kid in our band was a winner." |
Maine West's 114 member marching unit's show covered a wide variety of music and skills. The band entered the field to a moving arrangement of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." The show continued with a marching drill, accompanied by a percussion feature, "Turkey and the Straw." Next, the band combined their marching and musicianship to "Black Saddle," an arrangement featuring solos by Mark Rohrbein '81 on trumpet and Jim Crandall '81 on saxophone. The West Warriors then proceeded to perform their concert number, "Tocatta!" featuring the Maine West Twirling and Flag Corps. Finally, the band concluded their show by forming the traditional MW Varsity "M". The show was performed under the direction of Drum Major Andy McCarthy '81. Mr. Magnusson explained. "The primary purpose of our participation was for the experience and exposure. It was an opportunity for us to see other bands which have a tradition of performing in meets like this." |
