Board Chose Right With Maine North

The District 207 Board of Education has decided to close Maine North. Choosing North was the only possible decision.

While Maine East also could have been chosen, East has many facilities, such as Center Court (a program for the handicapped) and the main studio of WMTH, which would cost too much to recreate in one of the other schools.

Maine North is the newest of the schools and has many fine programs and facilities, but it also has the smallest enrollment of the four Maine high schools. Many of Maine North's students live in suburbs such as Niles, Morton Grove, and Glenview. By releasing the elementary school districts not in Des Plaines and Park Ridge to go to the high schools in their own cities (as the Board of Education is thinking of doing with
Glenview District 34) the rest of the Maine North students can easily be absorbed by Maine East and Maine West. The closing of Maine North will save the board money in transportation also, as Maine North is the only Maine high school not already on established, regular Nortran bus routes (other than school day routes).

The Board of Education looked at Maine West and Maine South along with Maine East and Maine North to decide the advantages and disadvantages of closing each Maine Township high school. The board spent over a year in gathering information to help in the decision, taking a long, careful time to decide. The decision to close Maine North was made with three board members voting to close Maine East. In deciding to close Maine North, we feel the Board made the right choice.
