Gridmen Win Pair, Still Seeking Title

Coming off an upset loss to Glenbrook South, the Maine West Warrior football team rebounded with a close 7-6 victory over Maine East.

A block punt by Frank Surz with a ground counter attack set up a Mike Miller 20-yard dash for the score with the all-important extra point was missed making the score 7-6.

Maine East came back late in the game threatening, but with the help of an excellent pass rush by Tim Interrante, the Warriors held off the late-game threats.

The following week the Warriors obliged a Homecoming crowd by defeating New Trier West to even their record to 2-2 in conference and an overall record of 3-3.

The final score was 12-6 with Bill Nicholas rushing for over 190 yards and scoring twice with both extra points missed. New Trier tallied once completing the score of 12-6.
The Homecoming win put the Warriors in a tie for second place. Although the Warriors lost two conference games, a win over Glenbrook North, along with Glenbrook South losing one more game, and, finally, Highland Park defeating Glenbrook North would put the Warriors into the playoffs. Kevin Clifford and George Arvanitis, sidelined with ankle injuries last week, were back in the line-up although Clifford saw minimal action.

The sophomore team lost to Maine East and tied New Trier West. This makes their record 2-3-1. The freshmen split losing to Maine East 14-20, and defeating New Trier East 14-6. The B team won twice beating Maine East 6-0 and had to play Notre Dame and were victorious 18-6.
