Runners Looking Ahead to State |

| Cross country started their season fine, and it looks as though they're going to end it just the same way. The Wheeling Invitational held on Saturday, Oct. 11, was on a cold morning. The varsity team that day was composed of Chris Walsh; John Dobbs; Jeff Walsh. replacing injured Mike Schacte; and Jim McArdle, replacing Jerry Kleiner who was injured. Later, McArdle twisted his ankle in the race. Fortunately, the team got a clean sweep with an excellent victory. Also at this meet Ed Johnson broke the course record. Just two days later at St. Ignatius, the girls' junior varsity leader and the meet's top runner was Ellen Duntemann. For the varsity Lory Tonske was the first Warrior to cross the finish line. The first two runners on the junior varsity team were |
Warriors Tom Fairhead and McArdle. The girls brought home the second place trophy. On Tuesday, Oct. 14, the teams stayed home and ran against New Trier West, Taft, and Lane Tech. The key girl runners were Tonske, Denise Kearns, Julie Becker, and Beth Kopp. These girls won second place for the team. The varsity defeated every team except New Trier West. They lost to them by only one point. The teams competed in the Central Suburban League last Saturday. The girls ran successfully and received a second place trophy. Cross country is just about over and some runners are hopefully heading toward the biggest meet of the year. This is the state meet in Peoria on Nov. 8. |
