Optimist Club Hosts Appreciation Week

Youth Appreciation Week is sponsored by the Optimist Club of Des Plaines. The purpose of the club is to give community youth a better appreciation of local government and industry.

Youth Appreciation Week, which was Nov. 8 through 17, involved juniors currently enrolled in U.S. history courses. They are selected by their teachers. Youth Appreciation is part of a school activity which provides opportunities to develop leadership.

Nine boys and eight girls were nominated for this program. The boys are Harold Agnos, Kenneth Begg, Andrew McCune, Dave Ratner, Daniel Roeder, Mark Roller, Greg Sauber. Peter Weiss, and
Mark Mertes. Girls nominated were Julie Baumhart, Karen Hanson, Mary Helminski, Mary Kirsh, Debbie LaMantia, Kathy McCabe, Laura Meisterheim, and Cindee Bath. These students are all juniors.

Four alternates were also chosen. They were Andy Kopp, Debbie Breit, Jeanne Heidemann, and Mary Permoda.

On Saturday, Nov. 8, the youths arrived at the first floor of the Des Plaines City Hall. Here, Junior City Officers were selected. They toured the Police Department and City Hall.

"Youth Appreciation Week was an excellent program for our students who are interested in a career in government or business," stated Mr. Edstrom.
