| The Maine West Warrior varsity football team concluded their season with a come from behind victory over Glenbrook North. Losing 7-0 in the fourth quarter, the Warriors came back with Kevin Clifford running 87 yards and scoring a 2-point conversion competing the score 8-7. However, the Warriors were defeated, 14-13. Their season ended when Glenbrook North defeated New Trier West. The Warriors final record was 5-4. All Conference elections were Rick Schulte, George Arvanitis, Scott Hackbarth, Frank Surz, Tim Rapinchuk, Greg Kardasz, Kevin Clifford, and Bill Nicholas. The cross country team ended their season with John Dobbs and Chris Walsh going downstate placing nineteenth and forty-eight respectively out of a field of 132. Meanwhile, the girls took eighth place out of 19. Out of 131 participants, Lory Tonske placed twentyfifth; Beth Kopp, fortieth; Denise Kearns, sixty-third; Ellen Duntemann, seventy-fourth; Kate McLaevy, seventy-eighth, and Jackie Turnball, eighty-second. The Maine West varsity soccer team lost its last conference game to Glenbrook North with a final score of 0-1. In its first sub-sectional game the uecer team |
defeated Maine North. 2-1. This game was played at home and had four overtimes. Each overtime lasted five minutes. When another goal was not scored by either team after the fourth overtime, a shoot-out occurred. A shoot-out is when each team chooses five of their best shooters to play one-on-one against the opponent's goal keeper. The Warriors made all five penalty kicks and defeated Maine North. The second sub-sectional game was played against the Prospect Knights at Prospect. unfortunately, the Knights shut out the Warriors, 0-3. The varsity soccer season ended with a 7-7-2 record and placed second in the Central Suburban League. There were three captains this year: Mike Chiropolis, Dave Steil, and Brian Weld. Weld, Steil, and Ken Wrona made all-conference. Weld was chosen as one of the top 88 players in the state by the National Coaches Association; and he was also chosen by the team as the most valuable player. Dave Gad was chosen by his teammates as the most improved player. The girls' tennis season was unsuccessful in districts. However, the JV had an impressive season and will be strong next year. |
