| The boys' basketball team opened the season last Friday night against Evanston. The basketball team is playing in the Ridgewood Thanksgiving Tournament which started last Monday and will last until next Friday. The basketball team looks to be good, and with the help of Coach George Verber the team may have a very surprising year. The boys' basketball team schedule for the first 10 games of the season is as follows: Nov. 21 Maine West played Evanston; Nov. 24-28 Maine West plays in the Ridgewood Thanksgiving Tournament, Dec. 5 Maine West plays New Trier West; Dec. 9 Maine West plays Elk Grove, Dec. 12 Maine West plays Highland Park; Dec. 13 Maine West plays Rolling Meadows; Dec. 19 Maine West will play Glenbrook South. The Maine West wrestling team opened practice this year, on Nov. 3 with roughly 50 grapplers coming out. Coach Tom Mietus feels his varsity should take conference. His goals are to send five wrestlers to sectionals and three wrestlers down state. The Warriors closest threat this year will be the Maine East Demons. Always being archrivals, the Demons also have a strong team. |
The Warriors' first meet is at Arlington on Saturday, Nov. 22. They will go to Prospect tonight. On Nov. 29 they will wrestle Niles North. The Warriors' rigorous practice includes running, weight lifting, and, of course, wrestling. Coach Gary Hutchinson coaches JV; and Coach Bill Barringer coaches the freshman team. Sophomores who figure in helping team are Joe Cook, Mat McGrath, Cesar Blacno, Mike Donon, and Dan Sigman. Rick Schulte took first in districts last year and second in sectionals before placing eighth downstate. However, the Warriors lost five starters last year in some critical areas. The individual weight classes are starting to shape up with Jim Hanson going at 98 pounds, and 105, 119, and 126 still undecided. At 112, returning letterman Chris Freeman, and at 132, Richard Fang. At 138 pounds is being decided between Paul Zurlo and Blanco. At 145 pounds is Shawn Kelleher; at 155, Jeff Maxwell; at 167, Ron Niebow; at 185, Steve Hilliard; and at heavyweight, Schulte. The JV team also has a strong team and should fare well this year. |
