Speech Team Trying For
First Place

The Maine West Speech Team competed in a tournament billed as the "Civil War" of individual events. Maine West scored highest of the teams representing the North, but the South was victorious in the battle.

The contest was held at Homewood-Flossmoor High School with 39 schools competing. Maine West took fifth place with four south suburban schools on top. Those students winning individual trophies in the North versus South Speech Contest were Pam Peca '81 in prose reading, Lisa Marquette '81 and Jim Teevans '81 in humorous duet acting, and Suzy Kadlec '82 in declamation.
The four schools that topped West were Wheaton Central, Downers Grove South, Thornwood, and Thornridge. "General" Hon Mills, the coach of the Maine West Speech Team, was heard saying to some of the other Northern commanders, "The North will rise again!"

Also on Saturday Maine West sent another team to Dundee High School to try their forces at the local level. They too suffered defeat. Both teams were not totally distraught at the losses because their forces were split, and they believe that they will have better luck in the future tournaments.

Tomorrow, the speech team will compete at Lyons Township High School in the hope of regaining their first place standings.
