Fencers Even

The Maine West High School fencing team opened the 1980-81 season with a loss score 7-11 in the Maine South tournament. The teams competing in the tournament included Catholic Memorial, Culver, University of Chicago, New Trier West, and Maine West.

Against Catholic Memorial the foil team of Nancy Sperling, Frank Garcia, and Mike Naranjo came up with a score of two wins and seven losses. The epee team of Steve Spriggs, Jim O'Connell, and Kevin Snider accumulated eight wins and only one loss. The woman's foil team consisting of Dianne Davis, Shelly Garlick, and Joanne Breider had a total of six wins and three losses. West compiled a total score of 16 wins and 11 losses.
West barely slipped by Culver with a tie score of 9-9; but due to two fewer touches against West, the Warriors took the win. Foil had scores of 5-4, and epee had scores of 4-5. In woman's foil West edged Culver, 5-4.

The Warriors dominated the University of Chicago. A foil score of 5-1 gave West another victory. West fought a tough battle against New Trier. The foil team was beaten, 4-5; but in epee West had score of 6-3. The total score was 10-8 for another win.
