S. Congress Debates Bills

Do any of these topics interest you? Raising the driving age, revising standards for rating movies, reducing punishment for marijuana, a resolution to declare war on Iran, or imposing the death penalty in the U.S.? If so, maybe you should be in Student Congress.

These are just a few of the topics Student Congress will be discussing and presenting bills and laws for. Student Congress teaches its participants a great deal about how laws are written and passed. Student Congress meets once a month from October through March. When they meet, groups of 20-25 students analyze and debate bills already written by some students. The students have already researched their topics before Congress has met, and each student gives a speech on his view- point of the bill presented. If
the student has researched and presented his speech well, he can earn points toward membership in the National Forensic League. Eight students have already qualified for membership.

This year there have been five meetings of Student Congress. The next one is at Niles West today and tomorrow. On Mar. 20, 21, and 22, the students will be going to ISTA, the Illinois Speech and Theatre Association, at Glenbrook High School. At the end of May they will be going to IHSA competition.

Helen Monaghan '81, Melissa Pytlik '82, Cary Coglianese '82, Ed Buc '83, Steve Wells '83, Amy Glass '83, Erin Arquilla '83, Donna Di Maggio '83, and Preeti Parikh '83 are the students from Maine West who are participating in Student Congress.
