Maine West To Host Metro History Fair

The Chicago Metro History Regional Fair, founded by the Illinois Humanities Council, will be held here at Maine West on Saturday, Mar. 21. The fair is designed to awaken students' knowledge on history.

The fair is a competitive event in which individual students or a small group of students can enter projects on their family's or community's history.

There are three types of projects. These are essays, exhibits, and performances. The essays are only to be done by an individual and are to be no more than 15 double-spaced typed pages. A bibliography and footnotes must be included, and photographs or other supporting materials may be put in an appendix.

The exhibits must use visual aids and must be freestanding on the floor. The size limitations on the exhibits are 6 feet high x 30 inches long x 40 inches wide, and no more than two people can do an exhibit.
The performances are limited to no more than 109 minutes. There are two types of performances: a media performance and a live performance. A media performance should include a videotape presentation or a tape presentation or a film. A live performance should include dramatic presentations such as a skit, dance, or short play. Performances are limited to no more than five people. All exhibits and performances must be accompanied by a written description and summary. This summary shouldn't be more than five pages long.

Prizes that will be given out are a $2,000 scholarship, a $1,000 scholarship, a trip to Washington, D.C., books on Chicago history, and other smaller prizes.

Some people will be chosen from the regional fairs to advance to the final fair which will be held at the Cultural Center Chicago Public Library some time in May.
