Careers Ahead of College

BY PETER WEISS

Recently, the majority of the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors registered for their desired classes for the upcoming school year. After talking with many of my friends about what classes they are taking next year, I found something unbelievable about the situation.

So many of the Maine West students, and probably many of the high school students in the whole suburban Chicago area, are taking the easy way out. They sign up for the easiest classes and the easiest schedule possible, as long as they, usually sophomores and juniors, get out at 1:53 or 2:40.
Besides wanting early dismissal, many Maine West students take so many vocational classes and not many academic courses, just so the next school year will be a "breeze." It is true that next year will be a "breeze," but what about after you are out of high school with a job or in college?

There is a saying, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." Is this true any more? When the United States government brought out the idea of having a peace-time draft, 18 and 19-yearold teenagers were unbelievably upset over this idea. I wonder if the United States went to war if it would be defended, or would people take the easy way out again?
