Boys' Basketball Team Ends With Regional Finale

After winning the first-round game in the Maine West regional, the boys' basketball team brought their season to an end with a loss in the regional championship game.

On Friday, Feb. 27, the Warriors faced Waukegan East and lost, 65-62, in overtime. The cagers were leading by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, but the margin was narrowed to 6 when Dave Hund fouled out with 2:30 left in the game. East's defense and free throws tied the game and brought it into overtime where six missed free-throw opportunities cost the cagers the game. Hund was the leading scorer with 26 points, and Dan Batka added 15 points.

On Mar. 3 the cagers survived the first round of the State Class AA tournament with a 62-42 victory over Maine North. The Warriors took an early lead of 14-2 at the end of the first quarter and maintained the lead throughout the game. They also shot 89 per cent at the free throw line, sinking 24 of 27 charity shots. Individual scorers for the Warriors were Dean Vaia with 22 points and Tim English with 18 points.
Maine West lost all hopes of a re-gional championship when they lost to Elk Grove on Friday, Mar. 6. Fouls and turnovers proved to be the downfall of the Warriors. At half time the score stood at 33-29, and it looked as though West might take the lead when Hund blocked three Elk Grove shots within 30 seconds. The cagers hit several baskets to close within 55-53 when two free throws by Elk Grove clinched the win. Vaia led the scorers with 24 points, and English added nine points.

Dan Batka was voted the team's M.V.P. and was also selected as a member of the Central Suburban League All-Conference team. He led the team in scoring and rebounds during the season. Dean Vala and Dave Hund were elected co-captains by their teammates for the 1980-81 season.

The Warriors gained respect throughout the season. A tough crop of juniors led by Ken Edwards, Rusty Becker, and Steve Kampshroer should spark the Warriors next year to another respectable season. As for now, the Warriors can hold their heads high with their fine performance for this season.
