Softball Team Losing, But Season Still Young

The Maine West girls' varsity softball team is well into its season with a 1-5 standing. The girls have been on the good side of Mother Nature this year.

Thursday, Apr. 9, the girls hosted Niles North. The varsity grabbed the win 14-11. The winning pitcher was Michelle Fang. Nancy Sperling came to the mound for the save. Cyndi Sniezek and Jean Zabroske each contributed a couple of singles toward the winning score. The j.v. grabbed the victory, scoring 18 runs over Niles North's 12.

Saturday, Apr. 11, the Warrior girls hosted Maine South for a doubleheader. In the first contest, South walked away with an easy win of 20-1. The game was ended after the fifth inning due to a slaughter rule. Sniezek and Jill Kratochvil had the only hits for that game.

A miracle almost occured during the second contest. The win slipped out of Maine West hands toward the end of the game. West ended up losing 11-4 after playing a tight game. Fang hit a double to help the Warriors against their rivals.
Sperling and Doreen Fillipp banged out a few singles but it wasn't enough to help the girls take the win from Maine South.

The varsity lost against Deerfield, Apr. 14, in only three innings of play, 5-1. Sniezek and Diane Fillipp were the only two to get a hit during this shortened contest.

Maine West traveled to Glenbrook South for their first conference game. The girls kept up a tough battle in spite of the rainy weather but couldn't squeeze ahead for the win. Varsity ended up losing, 12-8. Debbie Guetzloff smashed a single in the first inning which drove in two runs. Sniezek was roaring Thursday, hitting a double and a single in the sixth inning to score Betty Olen. Diane Fillipp, Fang, and Kratochvil belted out singles during the breathtaking game. The j.v. was defeated 27-15.

Saturday, Apr. 25, West is hosting New Trier East for a nonconference game. Upcoming conference games are Apr. 28, home against Highland Park, and away on Apr. 30, against New Trier West.
