Wastyn qualifies for state
by Jerry Jewitt
After Maine West Golf team was eliminated in the Sectional meet, individual Scott Wastyn went on to the State Tournament.
"It was tough," stated Wastyn, "the first day I had to battle 30 mph. gusts. However, the earlier golfers played in much better weather which gave them a great edge. The second day I did not have to struggle against the elements but could not bring my score up enough after the previous day to let me go any further in the competition."
The golf team wound up its season with a 7-4 record in regular competition play. September 30, Maine West went to Maine East and lost with Bob Koehler low scorer for the Warriors at 39 in 9 holes. On October 1, West hosted Wheeling and won. Koehler again had a low 39.
On October 5, the division meet was held at Lake Bluff between six schools. West placed 4th, and Wastyn had a low 81 for 18 holes. October 7, the district meet included 8 teams and the Warriors placed second. Wastyn also placed 2nd in the individual category with 77 for 18 holes.
This qualified them for the sectional meet, Oct. 12 between 12 schools. Maine West was eliminated here but Wastyn was one of the 5 low scorers who went on to the state tournament.
Coach Eugene Zuccarini stated "I'm very well satisfied with how the season was played and very pleased with how it finished. We did very well considering New Trier, the state champions was in our conference. The highlights were finishing second in our district and Wastyn's qualifying in the state tournament."
