Swimmers overcome obstacles
By Nancy O'Connor
"We expect to keep the score within 15-20 points in today’s meet against Evanston," said John Carle, Maine West's Girls Swim Coach.
On October 15, the varsity girls swim team captured their fifth win against Niles West with the score of 76-51. Carol Harnett '85 took first in 100 free and 100 back, while teammate Liz Spielman '83 captured first in 200 free and 500 free and sophomore Kirsten Elms placed first in 50 free. The junior varsity also beat Niles West with a score of 80-46.
Although the girl swimmers lost to Maine South on both levels last Thursday, Harnett again captured a first place in backstroke with a time of 1:09.228 along with teammates Kara Zonavetch and Elms in 100 breast and 50 free respectively.
"I have a lot of confidence in this team. If I didn't have confidence in the swimmers as a team, that would be when I'd quit," said Coach Carle.
This year the varsity girls season record stands at 5 wins and 4 losses, while the junior varsity record stands at 6 wins and 3 losses.
"Returning swimmers have undergone many changes, this being my first year as both swimming and diving coach here at Maine West, and I have to say they have been very cooperative. They work very hard and adjust to changes very nicely," explained Coach Carle.
