VOL. XXIV, NO. 3
Girls cross country team
takes fourth in state meet
by Cheryl Dryden
Maine West took fourth place, just two points away from third place in last Saturday's state meet in Peoria.
West finished with 142 points behind Downers Grove North. All‑State honors were given to Bridget Boyajian '83 and Trish Kiraly '85 for being two of the top 25 finishers.
Finishing with a time of 11:40, Kiraly took third place in the two‑mile race despite the fact that she finished with the same time as Pam Quaranghi of Collinsville who was given second place. "I should have gotten second because the girl I was racing against was just as good as me and we ran into the chute at the same time, but she shoved me out."
Boyajian finished in sixth place. "I don't mind the place that I got, but I don't feel that I ran as well as I could have."
Kiraly first became interested in running during her Freshman year in gym after finishing her mile with a time of 6:45. Kiraly has since cut her time down to 5:23.
Both Boyajian and Kiraly run an average of five or six miles a day. When asked why, Kiraly simply replied, "It's fun!"
Boyajian has had a very successful season despite an injury she suffered that kept her from running for a month. "It didn't hurt my performance in the following meets though because when you run in the summer it backs you up so that your endurance isn't lost," Boyajian explained.
When questioned about the future Kiraly is of yet undecided about running. "Yes, because it's very competitive in college and no because it's also a lot of hard work in college." Boyajian isn't having such a hard time deciding. She said that she will continue running because she really enjoys it and it has become a part of her daily routine.
Many runners represented West at the November 13 meet. Melissa Kinnear ('86) came in 59 place individually, Jean Mundt '85 finished the race in 97 place, Linda Sherkey '85 placed 82, Ellie Duntemann '83 finished in 106 place and Karen Henke '83 took 111 place. In the boys race, Tony Paul '83 took 48 place.
