Volleyball captures third
at the
state tournament
by John Kilcullen

Ending with a third place finish in the State Tournament, Coach Royleen Tipton said, "The team is outstanding and had the best finish ever." Mary Just, '83, Aurora Zurlo '83, and Denise Dzik '83, all said, "The team played very well."

The Warriors defeated Althoff of Belleville, 15-2 and 15-4, to capture the third place finish. After the victory Coach Tipton said, "I'm relieved, it was a tremendous season and the team is feeling good."

The team was forced out of the Championship in the semifinals by Mother McAuley with a score of 12-15 and 8-15. Coach Tipton said, "We used some new techniques that worked, but not enough." She also added, "There was no let down after Mother McAuley."

In the quarter-finals of the tournament the Warriors defeated Plainfield, 15-3 and 15-5. After their match Coach Tipton said, "I was pleased with their performance. They played aggressively to get ready for Mother McAuley."

Coach Tipton told how she felt about the third place finish, "I'm very excited about it! They played very well in all the matches."

This was the first time a Maine West Volleyball team had been in the top four in the State Tournament. Last year the team had qualified for state but were knocked out in the quarter‑finals.
With this third place win, Coach Tipton reached her 200th victory in her 13 years of coaching volleyball.

In order to advance to the State Tournament the Warriors had to win in the Super-Sectionals, Sectionals, and the Regionals. The girls defeated Barrington 15-8, 11-15, and 15-7 to capture the Super-Sectional title, on November 6.

Two days before the Super-Sectionals, Maine West defeated Hoffman Estates, 15-3 and 15-12 to receive the Sectional title on November 4. They also beat Maine South, 15-9 and 15-4, during the Sectionals on November 2.

The team a week before took the Regional title by beating Addison Trail, 15-2 and 15-5, on October 29. They also defeated Elk Grove, 15-6 and 15-0.

Aurora Zurlo and Denise Dzik were both named All Conference for this season. Last year they had also been named All Conference. For the first time, Mary Just was named to the All State Tournament Team. Mary was one of six to make the team. Mary said, "It was my goal for this year."

Next year's team will be without five seniors, Robin Natzke '83, Rose Zegler '83, Just, Zurlo, and Dzik. Coach Tipton concluded with, "It will be very different without them." She added about Just, Zurlo, and Dzik, "They have been the three best athletes I've ever coached."
