Swimmers beat Waukegan
By Margy Moore

"I think this was a fantastic first meet," says Head Swimming Coach John Carle when describing the team's 79-43 victory over Waukegan West.

"A lot of the boys turned in times that were very competitive, and close to 'personal bests'. Hopefully, this will give them incentive to shoot for lower times," Carle added.

"I was pleased with many of the performances," Carle continued, "the Medley Relay time was excellent." That team included Ross Roel '84 and seniors, John Goeke, Jeff Waddell, and Marc terHorst.

"John also did a fine job in the I.M.," Carle added. Goeke clocked a time of 2:22 in the Individual Medley.

"The 50 free race was phenomenal," Carle beamed. Led by Bryan Nischke '83, the three Maine West swimmers finished within .6 second of each other.
"The free relay was something else," continued Carle. Each member swam the 100 in under a minute, and "Paul Von Destinon, who had the highest time, had just finished the 500 free and 100 breast, which are practically back to back events."

Von Destinon '84 placed first in both events, while Roel took first in 100 backstroke, clocking 1:03. Goeke placed first in 100 butterfly with a time of 1:01 and Nischke's 57:5 in 100 free was good enough for first place.

"The freshmen also did a good job. They're all newcomers to swimming, but they got up on the blocks showing poise,, and they did well. Mr. Retel is also doing a good job coaching them," Carle finished.

Mr. Robert Retel, health teacher, and Mr. James Carter are the assistant coaches.

The team will travel to Glenbrook North for a meet at 5:30 tonight.
