Contest play begins competition
"I'm enjoying working on the play; it's a very good script ...the girls are working hard on their characters," commented Mr. Ron Mills, director of the contest play, "Ladies at the Alamo."
"If we do the play justice," he continued, "and do it as well as it can be done, it can be a very competitive play."
"Ladies at the Alamo" is the 1983 contest play. Molly Sullivan '83 is cast as Dede Cooper, the lead. Also participating are Leslie Melchert '86 as Joanne, Lori Malina '83 as Shirley, Kathy Dadabo '85 as Suits and Melora Mills '85 as Bella.
"Ladies at the Alamo," written by Paul Zindel, takes place in a Texan community theater. Dede Cooper is the art director of the theater. A patron of the arts, Shirley, who has endowed this theater, decides that she will replace Dede. "It's a power struggle between the creative leader of the theater and the financial leader," explained Mr. Mills.
"Ladies at the Alamo" will first be performed at the Chastian Festival Friday and Saturday, March 4 and 5. "Although this is not really competition, the judges will rank the plays," said Mr. Mills.
A contest play is a cutting from any play that is not longer than 40 minutes in performance and 10 minutes in scenery set up and take down.
In the regional competition Maine West will compete against six other plays. The first and second place plays will continue to sectional competition. The top two will continue on to state.
Mr. Mills has directed two contest plays for Maine West in the past. "One was eliminated in section competition." Mr. Mills said, "and last year we won sectionals and placed fifth in state."
