VOL. XXIV, NO. 5
Blanco, Dorion, Iatrides
advance to sectionals
by Jim Grochocinski
Varsity wrestlers Cesar Blanco '83, Mike Dorion '83, and George Iatrides '84 advanced to the Sectional competition held at Leyden last Saturday.
Scott Keane '83, wrestling at 155 pounds, suffered a twisted knee in practice. Keane is out for the season, and Head Coach Rich Lombardi adds, "With Scott in the lineup we would have had a lot more depth."
Jim Hanson '83 was in a car accident before the season began and will not return. Coach Lombardi said, "That hurt us badly because Jim would have probably been one of our starting lightweights. Last year he won the Lake Park Tournament."
The Varsity Team faced Niles West on January 21, and lost a very close meet, 25-23. The Warriors were winning going into the heavyweight bout, and Kevin Harris '84 was wrestling at heavyweight for the first time on varsity.
Harris put his opponent right to his back and it appeared that he was pinned. The referee was out of position at the time and did not call a pin, but when the match was re‑examined on the VCR it was shown to actually be a pin. Harris lost the match 21‑16.
The next day the Warriors were in a quad-meet with Libertyville, Glenbrook North and Loyola. Coach Lombardi said, "They did real good; they came back the next day and we beat Libertyville who had a real good team." Maine West beat Libertyville by a score of 30-27 and then went on to blow out Loyola 63-3.
The next team the Warriors faced was Glenbrook North. Coach Lombardi said, "We lost a tough one to Glenbrook North, who are conference champs on the other side of the North Division, by two points, 27‑25.
When asked what weights we are strongest at, Coach Lombardi responded, "Right now we are definitely strongest at 138 with Dan Brown '83, 145 with Cesar Blanco '83 and 185 with Mike Dorion '83. Those three are leading the team with wins and pins.
The team is getting some surprising results from lower class: men at the lower weights. Up to the 126 weight class there is only one upperclassman wrestling varsity, Bill Mandrella '83. The Warrior team is also getting some good results at the heavyweight class with George Iatrides '84.
Dorion has been, without a doubt, this year's most outstanding wrestler. Coach Lombardi said that, "Mike has done an outstanding job this year. He has been an excellent leader, and he is one of the team captains."
Dorion has won a large number of honors this year. He has been voted outstanding wrestler in two tournaments, Lake Park which had 16 teams and Glenbard West which had eight teams.
Dorion was named the Tribune Athlete of the Week two times. Dorion had 21 pins this season, breaking the old record of 16 set by Dave Cavazos in 1978.
Coach Lombardi said, "Mike has been doing a super job. He is a good kid to work with; he is a hard worker and I'm real happy with Mike."
