VOL. XXIV, NO. 6
New sports program outweighs old
Due to financial cutbacks, the Board will eliminate fencing, bowling and field hockey. In place of these three activities, District 207 will offer girls' soccer. The benefits of the new program far out‑weigh those of the old program.
Under the old program, not all girls have the opportunity to play each sport.
In a survey taken in the three schools, over 250 girls expressed an interest in soccer. The interest in soccer is much greater than that in fencing, field hockey and bowling.
Secondly, the Maine school district is one of the few districts in the state that does not have a girls soccer program. In that respect, soccer is long overdue at the Maine schools. At the moment, plans are underway to ensure the status of girls' soccer as a state recognized spring sport.
Finally, an additional sport offered during the springtime will allow more girls to participate in athletics.
