Inexperienced baseball team
faces rebuilding season
by Mike Burdick
"We're rebuilding right now. We've lost everyone from last year except one regular, that's Bob Hanselmann. We're going to be lacking in experience. It should be a real interesting ball club," said Mr. Albert Carstens, varsity baseball coach.
The season should be challenging, among the problems to be faced are "We've got a couple of things going against us right now. If we can get through the next three weeks with a lot of hard work, we should be able to find some players to replace the ones that we lost," said Coach Carstens.
With the first game on April 2 at home against Oak Park at 11 am., the team is under the gun.
"We have a problem this year, we have no practice area. That's going to hurt us, plus the fact that we are so inexperienced. Our weakest area is our experience. We know who we have back, we know some of the juniors that we have brought up. We know some of the sophomores that we have
brought up. But we are lacking in game experience. When you lose eight out of nine regulars, you know that some of the other ballplayers haven't had a chance to play that much," commented Coach Carstens.
"I wish I could say that we were strong in pitching, but I don't know right now, because we had such a great turnover. It could be a fun year, but it is going to be hard work," said Coach Carstens.
"Nobody has any set positions, every position is open on the team, when we get done with our exhibition games, the best nine men are going to play," explained Coach Carstens.
There are 2 sophomores, 8 juniors and 11 seniors on the team so far. Coach Carstens concluded, "We do have a few returning lettermen. Basically we are an inexperienced ball cub, but we're just going to have to see how much we can learn in four weeks."
