Girls" Basketball Team
advances to Quarterfinals

In the final three seconds of Monday's Super-Sectional game against the Freeport Pretzels, Denise Dzik '83 shot two free throws in the last three seconds to clinch a 52-54 Warrior victory. At 6:30 p.m. tomorrow night the team meets Chicago Maria (28-2) in the Assembly Hall in Champaign for the first game of the quarterfinals.

Diane DeSantis '85 led the team in scoring with 14 points, followed by Dana DeRosa '85 with 13. Both Dzik and Mary Just '83 had 11 points.

To get into the Super-Sectionals, the team defeated Fremd for the Sectional title last Wednesday night, 39-37. The team earned a spot in the "Sweet Sixteen."

The game was close throughout, and Fremd had a chance to tie it up in the last three seconds but missed two shots. The score was tied at 16 at the half, and again at 34 with 1:18 left to play.

With 53 seconds left in the game the Warriors pulled ahead 38-34, when Dzik sank two free throws. Just, who averaged 19 points a game, got 12 points while playing on a sprained ankle. The Warriors forced 21 turnovers.
Friday, March 11 Maine West faced Elk Grove and defeated them, for the regional title. High scorer for the game was Just, who scored 20 points. Head Coach Derril Kipp said, "Our passing was very crisp. We worked together real well."

Monday, March 14 the Warriors entered the first game of sectionals against Conant and won 52-48. The Warriors almost lost by getting into foul trouble early in the game.

Conant scored 22 points on free throws. Conant outscored Maine West 19-12 in the fourth quarter, and scored on 11 of 16 free throw attempts. Four of the missed free throws came in the last minute.

Conant pulled within two points and had a player at the foul line, but she missed both shots. DeRosa then hit two free throws to put the game out of reach for Conant.

Just, Dzik, and De Rosa all scored 10 points, Aurora Zurlo '83, and DeSantis scored 8, and Cindy Sherkey '83 scored 4.
