Inclement weather forces slow start
for Varsity baseball team
By Roxann Mehle and Mike Burdick
"This happens every year.", said Baseball Head Coach Albert Carstens about the season's beginning. Weather conditions have prevented play in six games so far.
"Last year we started the same way because of inclement weather," said Randy Johnson '83.
Pat Gora '84 pitcher and right fielder said, "The team will profit from the extra practice we are getting. We have a chance to get to know how each other plays."
They won 4-1 and lost 12-10 in the double header against Freeport on April 16. Jim Hofferitza '85 was brought up from sophomore level to replace Steve Quarnstrum '83, who had a broken finger.
Maine East won the game 8-0 on April 11.
On April 25 they play Niles West. Because of the extra practice, Johnson feels, "we should have plenty of experience by the Niles West game."
Although the weather has been a problem in game play, the team is taking it, "as well as can be expected," Gora said, "We'd rather be playing, but it's not our choice."
Last Saturday the Warriors dropped both halves of a double header to Wheaton‑Warrenville. In the first game Warrior pitchers Kyle Marquette and Dale Kisten held Wheaton‑Warrenville to just four runs but the Warrior bats never came around as the final score was 4‑0.
In the second game the Warrior bats came to life but defensive errors and a thirty mile an hour wind kept the team from taking the second game. "we started our come back when were already seven runs down," said Steve O'Donnell '84. The final score was a dismal 12-4. At one point the Warriors brought themselves to within three runs, but a porous defense couldn't back up their hitting.
This week the team will face Niles West, Deerfield, and Glenbrook North. Deerfield, the only home game in this week's lineup, starts at 4:30 p.m. today.
