Bad weather dampens softball season
by Eva Soltykiewicz

Maine West's girls softball team faced Glenbrook South Tuesday, April 12 and led with a score of 5-2 when the rain put a halt to the game.

The girls softball team has had some unfortunate luck. The weather has put a damper on a number of their games.

The team was to play host to Deerfield Thursday, April 14, when the game was cancelled because of wet fields. They were to face Waukegan West at Waukegan West Friday, April 15, when that game was also cancelled because the weather was too cold.

Coach Karen Kenyon's outlook for the season is optimistic. "We're hoping to place third or fourth because of the inexperience as a team. We hope to start playing better as a team as the season goes on."

After losing nine girls to graduation, Coach Kenyon has only three returning varsity players: Christy Arnold '83, Doreen Fillipp '83, and Rosanne Nicholas '84.

Last year Nicholas was named Central Suburban All‑Conference Outfielder. Both Arnold and Fillipp are infielders.

The team's conference games will be against Maine East, Evanston, New Trier, and Maine South. Maine West will play each opposing team twice, once at home, and once away, respectively: Maine East: April 19, May 5; Evanston: May 10, April 21; New Trier: April 26, May 12; and Maine South: May 17, April 28. All games will begin at 4:30 p.m.

The upcoming games are against Niles West, Tuesday, May 3, 4:30 p.m. at home; Prospect Tournament Saturday, May 14, at 10:00 a.m. at Prospect High School; Niles West, Thursday, May 19, at 4:30 p.m. at Niles West.

According to coach Kenyon, "The most challenging games will be against Evanston and New Trier because they are the defending conference champions.

The IHSA Regionals will be held May 23‑31.

Maine West girl's softball team lost a close game to Evanston last Thursday April 21, 9-8. "I thought the game was close and could have gone either way," commented Coach Karen Kenyon.

Christy Arnold '83 crossed the plate three times for the Warriors. Debbie Madaj '84 scored twice, but suffered a sprained ankle in the sixth inning. Colleen Lagoia '85, Janet McKenna '86 and Melannie Skinner '84 all scored once.

On Tuesday April 19, the girls defeated Maine East 23-1. The game only lasted five innings due to the "Slaughter Rule."

Doreen Fillipp '83 and Katherine Jacobsen '84 both scored four times for the Warrior team.

Arnold, Madaj and pitcher Mary Carlsen '83 all crossed the plate three times in the game.

Lagoia scored twice for the Warriors. Carrol Harnett '85, Kathie Phillipp '84 and Gail Hajost '84 both crossed the plate once for the team.

Coach Kenyon said, "Maine East was fun." This is the first time in around nine years West has defeated East."

The team lost their first game on Friday, April 8, to Arlington, 12-2. "They had first game, first inning gitters," commented Coach Kenyon.
