Coach King has 'high expectations'
for this year's tennis team
by Candy Braid
Although they have no "special line‑up and are still experimenting" with 5 lettermen returning to the boys tennis team, Head Coach Roger King has "high expectations".
Tomorrow at 4:30 p.m. the team will face Evanston at Evanston and they will be "one of our toughest competitors we have," said Coach King. On Friday, at 3:00 p.m. and on Saturday at 8:00 am., the team will go to the Arlington Invitational. On May 2 our sophomores will be playing away at Libertyville while the varsity is at home against Libertyville.
On May 3, the Warriors host another very tough competitor at home. New Trier at 4:30 p.m. May 5 and 9 the team will be away at Maine South and Fenton respectfully while May 10, the team hosts Niles West to close the season.
While the team is doing well, if the weather would improve, the team could do better. "They don't have the time to practice and many matches have been called because of the rain," said Coach King. As a result, two of the six matches scheduled have been cancelled or postponed. Dates have not been given for the postponed matches.
The match on April 11 against Addison Trail was taken, by a small margin with a score of 3-2 Maine West. Jim Postol '83, Jim Roy '83 and Brian McGuiness '84 all won their singles matches, while the doubles teams of Hero Wantanabe '84 and Paul Djuritic '84 and John Rebello '84 and Mike Tzitzis '83 lost their matches.
On Friday April 15 the team took on Forest View away and romped the Falcons 5-0. Postol beat John Han 6-0, 6-0 while McGuiness had little trouble beating Bill Libretti 6-1, 6-1. Roy had a close match against Jim Erlander 6-3, 6-2. In doubles play, Tzitzis and Rebello beat Mark Creech and Ben Agana 6-4, 6-3. Wantanabe and Djuritic ran over Jeff Marquardt and Jim Pergo 6-1, 6‑0.
On Saturday April 16, Maine West went to the Maine South invitational and came away with a first place for their efforts, despite rain and cold which eventually cancelled the match. The doubles team of Tzitzis and Rebello were knocked out of competition early. Wantanabe and Djuristic went on to the finals, which they didn't get to finish before the rain started. The same thing happened to Roy, who got through the first set but could go no further. Unfortunately, McGuiness lost 1-6, 4-6. Postol was the big winner when he beat Rosen from Maine East 6-2, 2-1.
The the rain started and they called the match and kept the scores as they were. The team had nine points to come into first place. Maine East was second with 7 1/2 points and Maine South was third with 6 1/2 points.
Coach King feels that even with the weather being against them, they have a good chance of going down state.
