VOL. XXIV, NO. 7
McCabe, Severino
hope for a district title
by Brigitte Curtis
"We'll be in districts with two very high‑powered teams Hersey and Prospect. As a team, though, we should place third," commented Boys' Gymnastics Coach Sid Drain.
There are six events in high school boys' gymnastics: parallel bars, pommel horse, high bar, vaulting, floor exercise and still rings. Each performer in a specific event is rated on form, risk, orginiality and difficulty. A score of 10 marks a perfect performance. A school's three best scores of each individual event are tallied for a final, over‑all team score.
Maine West's strongest event this year has been the still rings, with outstanding performances by Don Paulsen '83 and junior Mike McCabe's mid‑eight's average. Paulsen is currently ranked first in state on rings, while McCabe is an exceptional all-around gymnast, according to Coach Drain. The Coach also noted junior Frank Severino's vaulting performance, John Dema's ('84) work on rings and Frank Garcia's ('83) performance on the pommel horse.
The team's weakness, however, is in the high bars. "We just don't have the depth for it," commented Coach Drain. Injuries have been minimal this year. Bob Page '83 broke his hand early in the season and has been out, while McCabe was injured later and missed a couple of meets.
In addition to Page, Maine West will lose four other seniors to graduation this year: Paulsen, Garcia, Lance Wierenga and Matt Boemmel. "I'm very grateful for the team and Coach Drain; it's been a great two years and I'll miss them next year," remarked Boemmel. "The last three years the varsity team has set new team records because of Coach Drain's excellent support," commented Paulsen.
The last meet of the regular season will be held at home against Glenbrook South Friday, April 29 at 6:30 p.m. "The rest of the season will be great," said McCabe. "I know our team will break at least another school record. Hopefully we will make it to sectionals!"
Maine West met Maine East April 15 and suffered a 139.4-145.1 loss. Nevertheless, Paulsen set a school record of 9.1 on the rings. Recently Maine West placed fourth in both the Mundelein and Rolling Meadows invitationals. Earlier in the season West emerged as first of the 18 teams who competed in the Lake Park invitational. The team started its season on February 21 beating Evanston 132.1-72.6.
"I think that if the Maine East meet was any indication of our team potential, we have a good chance of at least a district title," commented Severino.
Maine West is currently ranked ninth in state.
