VOL. XXVIII, NO. 1
OCTOBER 1, 1986
Dr. Coburn proudly states
"We've got It all!"
I wish to extend to each of you a warm, personal welcome to Maine West. I am convinced this 1986-87 school year will be one of the most notable in Maine West's history.

Already 8 students in this year's senior class have been identified as National Merit Semi‑Finalists (the largest number of semi finalists in the history of Maine West). This indicates that students are taking school more seriously.

Maine West may be the only school in the country that has a Saturday Tutorial Program. Many students at Maine West are attending school six days a week when they participate in STP. For those students who work on Saturday, tutoring is available each period, Monday through Friday, in the Rotary Reading Room.

A review of our attendance figures for last year shows that Maine West students are approximately in the top 2% of public schools nationally in average daily attendance. Further, class probations and drops last year because of truancy or behavior problems were the lowest ever.

Recently, I have conducted two leadership seminars with approximately 100 students and have had the opportunity this fall to visit informally with student officers. I sensed a profound interest among these students to succeed academically and to provide exemplary leadership for the rest of the student body.
Our school yearbook, The Legend, and our school newspaper, The Westerner, have earned the highest awards a yearbook or school newspaper can earn locally, nationally, and internationally.., another first for Maine West.

While walking down the corridors of Maine West, I can feel the electricity generated by student enthusiasm ‑enthusiasm which easily translates into school spirit. It takes a large measure of school spirit in order for Maine West students to compete successfully in athletics, music, speech, and various scholastic and academic activities.

"We've got it all!" Yes, Maine West is "THE SCHOOL THAT WORKS!"

Sincerely,
MAINE TOWNSHIP
HIGH SCHOOL WEST
