VOL. XXVIII, NO. 1
What a privilege it is to attend a school where the scholars rank in the top ten percent in the United States! National Merit Semi‑finalists Keith Blue, Betty Huang, Andy Kotlinski, Ken Kroeker, Mike Miller, Sue Murphy, Kristin Schnell and Rob Sweet have earned not only our congratulations but our respect as well.
Our praise belongs first to these Merit Semi‑finalists, of course, and then to the dedicated teachers who have given up their time to conduct the preparatory classes and coach these scholars into winners, who use their potential.
Further recognition goes to all teachers at Maine West who provide our students, not only National Merit Semi‑finalists, but the means to better their education.
Over the years District 207 has had a number of students qualifying as National Merit Semi-finalists.
Maine West was the first school in our district to institute a study program, but until this year, has never had so many semi-finalists. This speaks well of our system, our teachers, and our self-motivated classmates and their supportive parents.
Qualifying for a National Merit Scholarship is impressive in itself, but winning can be even more rewarding. Scholarships can range in the thousands of dollars per recipient, and with the high cost of college education these days, the National Merit Scholar is well compensated for his efforts. Even if one does not become a National Merit Scholar, as a semi‑finalist he is often recruited by colleges and universities who offer partial or even full scholarships.
Although the semi‑finalists must continue to apply themselves in preparation for the National Merit Finals, we should be proud of their outstanding achievement.
