West welcomes new teachers to faculty

Eleven new teachers joined the Maine West faculty this year: Mrs. Mary Tabatt, counselor: Dr. Marty Landorf, chemistry teacher: Mrs. Sharen Stubbings, learning disabilities specialist: Mr.

James Sullivan, history teacher: Mr. Louis Thetard. photography teacher: Mrs. Miriam Neff, counselor: Mr. William Mann, P.E. teacher: Mr. Michael Murin, Spanish teacher: Mrs. Karen Gaynor, P.E. teacher: Mrs. Barbara Agar, special education teacher: and Mary Schmelzer, science teacher.

Mrs. Tabatt, a previous counselor at Maine West for five years, returned this year. She counseled at Champaign and Lake Park High Schools during her absence.

Mrs. Tabatt attended St. Olaf's College and the University of Illinois. She has a degree in music and a Master's in counseling of education and guidance.

"I am very happy to be back at Maine West,'' admitted Mrs. Tabatt. Her favorite recreational activity is music. She also enjoys cooking and bicycling.

Dr. Marty Landorf teaches Chemistry I Ace. and Chemistry II A.P. She previously taught at St. Viator's High School, Harper College, and College of Lake County.

"I became bored teaching at college," stated Mrs. Landorf, "I enjoy working with younger students rather than college students." Mrs. Landorf has "loved" Maine West so far. "I can't say enough nice things about the students I have met here. It has been delightful."

Mrs. Stubbings is the new Learning Disabilities Specialist, "I am impressed with the very nice people and the amount of opportunities for students here at Maine West," says Mrs. Stubbings. She earned her B.A. at State University of New York and her Masters at the National College of Education in Evanston.

Mrs. Stubbings is busy advising the Key club for her first time this year. She is also secretary of the Lake Shore African Violet Society.

The new American history and government teacher is Mr. Sullivan. He chose to be a history teacher because of his love of history in school and his experiences with nice teachers.

"I enjoy my classes this year because I like working with upperclassmen who are less to worry about," admitted Mr. Sullivan. He earned his B.A. from Western Illinois University and is currently working on finishing his Masters at Northern Illinois University. Mr. Sullivan is already actively involved in the school by being the sophomore coach of boy's football and the new coach of boy's sophomore baseball,

Mr. Thetard teaches both Photo I and general art classes. He describes his classes as, 'so far, so good." He continued, "I really enjoy and have a lot of fun with my classes."

He previously attended Illinois Wesleyan University and Illinois State University. His earlier teaching positions were at Verden High School and Illinois Central College. Mr. Thetard's enjoyments include sports, reading, traveling, and art.
Mrs. Miriam Neff returned to District 207 after a fifteen year absence in which she worked as a client counselor in a relocation corporation, and published two books as a free lance writer.

Her job as a counselor involves not just helping the student in one particular subject but in balancing a student's subjects and activities. Mrs. Neff enjoys Maine West very much. She says. 'a very special thing about Maine West is the friendliness of the faculty."

Mrs. Neff keeps busy going to classes working on her Doctorate. She also spends time water‑skiing, cross‑country‑skiing, and attending activities and events with her family.

Mr. Mann, a PE teacher, came to Maine West after teaching at the East and South schools for twenty two years. He has thoroughly enjoyed himself so far at Maine West.

Mr. Mann attended University of Illinois where he majored in physical education. He wrestled there and was a silver medalist in the NCAA. He is also amember of the Illinois Wrestling Hall of Fame.

He previously coached wrestling and track. Some of his activities include jogging. traveling and swimming.

This year marked the first year of teaching for Mr. Michael Murin. Before coming here he attended Augustana College, where he majored in Spanish and physical educat ion. Mt. Murin decided to teach Spanish because he enjoys the language, takes a great interest in the Spanish culture and wants to pass on his interest to the students.

Mr. Murin enjoys sports, reading, music and spending time with his family.

Another new gym teacher here at West is Mrs. Gaynor. She graduated in '81 from Western Illinois University with a major in physical education. She previously taught at East before coming here.

This year she teaches PE. Elective and said, "I love it!" She enjoys the students here and commented, 'They're a little more personable than at East. The people are friendly here. I feel like I'm at home."

Though she enjoyed East and has very good memories from there, she said that some of the differences between the two schools are "the students, the athletics and the total school spirit is better here."

Maine West has five teachers this year who have either been transferred back here or have taken a year leave and are returning to West. These teachers are Ms. Joanne Barnes. P.E. teacher: Mr. Dean Buckingham, English teacher: Mrs. Jan McClellan, social worker: and Mrs: Mary Mueller, English and Journalism teacher.
