Driver's students gear up for
new state road test
by Shelly Aiken
Last year, second semester and summer school Driver's Education teachers gave, for the first time, a driving test to some Driver's Ed students. This test, if passed, excluded the students from taking the driving test at a Drivers Exam Center.
Only students who receive an A or B in both phases of Driver's Ed can take the test. "Not an average," Mr. Vie Giovannini, chairman of Drivers Education, stated, "but an A or B in classroom/simulator and an A or B in behind‑the-wheel."
Mr. Giovannini believes that this test will make the students study harder. He stated. "We've already seen the results: it does make the kids study more."
"No one really had any objections to this test being given," Mr. Giovannini commented. ''The only effect of the test is that the kids are very happy."
The state is allowing the new test because they feel the student's behind‑the‑wheel instructor, who has driven with his students all semester, is better equipped to judge his student's driving capabilities.
The teachers also must be certified to give the driving test. If the student passes, he/she receives a signed piece of paper that the student takes to the Drivers Exam Center and exchanges for the license.
