Tennis team posts 2-1 record

The girls' tennis team is off to a 2-1 start.

Under the experienced leadership of Sharla Barone, the team seems to be drawing together as a formidable contender for the conference title.

Sharla Barone, the exciting junior sensation, will be having some tough competition this year from many other contenders. Sharla's goals this year are "to go downstate and win."

Those goals are tough to meet for anybody. Barone realizes that it won't be easy, because she will have to overcome Julie McKeon of Glenbrook South and Kathleen Meyer of Woodstock. McKeon, Meyer and Barone are all ranked in the top 8 in Illinois.

Although Coach King has been pleased with the success of his singles players, he realizes his teams' weakness lies in the doubles section. "We're not satisfied with our doubles play at all," states Coach King. "The biggest reason we're not having success with our doubles play is because they aren't aggressive enough," said Mr. King.

Some bright spots this year are Ho Jin Choi and Lori Postell. Coach King states, "Choi and Postell are the most improved play ers on the roster from last year. They've been pleasant surprises this year. Ho Jin Choi has won 2 tournaments and Postell has won the Maine West quad at three singles."

Coach King predicts that Sharla Barone will go downstate but that the rest of the team will probably need a little work before they are - state material.

The girls' toughest matches this year are against defending state champs, Rolling Meadows and Rockford.

Soccer shoots for conference

The boys' soccer team, looking for a conference title is off to a hopeful and promising start. As Coach Dave Winter stated, "We're better than last year. We have a core of good players that will get the job done," Key players for the season are Pat Anelli '88, Rosendo Juarez '87, Brian Sporleder '87, Chris Gad '87, John Mac '88, and Jesse Lopez '87.

Aside from exceptional players, this year's schedule of games is better. "There is a better mix of games. Last year we had a bunch of games at one time. This year they're more spread out," Coach Winter added.
The team suffers from lack of players: however, if everyone is healthy, the team will play well. Currently injured are James Holderness '87, (pulled muscle and also recovering from a broken leg), and Jack Klubek '88, (sprained ankle).

The team goal is to place better in conference standings this year. Last year the team's conference record was 1 win, 1 loss and 2 ties, This year there is a great amount of improvement.

First place in the conference seems likely for the Warrior team. As Brian Sporleder '87, stated, "If we keep our heads together and play as a team, we can win conference."

The sophomore and freshmen teams also seem promising. The sophomore team is plagued by injuries, but is working hard to do well. Thirty‑five to forty freshmen are out for the freshmen team. That is the biggest turnout West has had in 10 years.

Fan support is lacking for the Warrior Soccer team. James Holderness '87, mentions, "I'd like a lot of people to see us win our homecoming game versus Waukegan West."

Students compete in Summer Games

This past year's Prairie State Games, held in ChampaignUrbana at the University of Illinois, recognized some very special athletes from Maine West in fencing and basketball competitions. Ms. Karen Kenyon, Fencing Coach, told of a strong performance by two of the best fencers in the entire state from Maine West. Anita Baul, a graduate of the class of '86 was inducted into the Maine West Hall‑of‑Fame. Anita's outstanding fencing earned her 2nd in state.

Steve Chung, who was Midwest high school fencing champ at the Prairie State Games last year, almost repeated this year with a 2nd place win.

In basketball, Nancy Kennelly '88 and Heather Ertel '88 played on the scholastic team. Their team almost took top honors, but dropped the final game to Western by ten points, leaving them with a respectable 2nd place finish. Basketball Coach Derrill Kipp added. "It was a great experience for Nancy and Heather to compete with other kids."

Also in basketball Diane DeSantis played in the open division. Diane is a graduate of the class of '84 and is presently attending the University of Western Michigan on a basketball scholarship.
