Warriors dash off to a running start

Maine West's Cross Country team is off to an impressive start this year, placing fourth in a field of sixteen at the Maine West Center Meet Invitational.
Both the boys' and girls' varsity teams have hopes of capturing the conference title this year. The upcoming Glenbrook South dual meet will probably he a decisive factor in determining the conference champ.
The four top senior runners lost last year will have to be replaced by new talent this year. George Ganas, Mark Bradley. Duat Ngo, and Eric Obenberger are the four returning lettermen. while Jason Stoneham, Mike LeCompte, Dan McArdle, and Rick Buday will round out the varsity squad. "It's going to be tough defending our conference title this year. We were hurt a lot by the loss of Jeff Gallagher," stated Coach Ganas. Kyle Talbott is the most promising freshman. "Kyle could possibly run varsity by the end of this year," said Coach Lawyer. Hopefully the new runners and the veterans will be able to unite and form a winning team.
The girls' varsity will be led by Laura Kelley, a sophomore who transferred from Prospect, Debbie Dobbs, and Ann Schaecher, a returning varsity runner. Chris Medunycia, a freshman, and Marlen Garcia, a greatly improved sophomore, ought to help the team, while Josefa Schaecher and Carrie Bath will also run varsity.
The girls will have to overcome the loss of Melissa Kinnear, a state qualifier last year. Girls' varsity will also strive for a conference title this year.
The boys' varsity team has a current conference record of 3-1. losing a tough meet to Glenbrook South. Both the girls' varsity and junior varsity have a perfect conference record of 5-0. The boys have earned 7th and 5th places in invitationals, while the girls have received 6th and 3rd places.
The junior varsity girls have turned in 4th and 5th places, and the sophomore boys ran for 8th and 5th places. Our freshman boys' team is improving daily with new runners and more experience.
