VOL. XXVIII, NO. 1
Volleyball team sets high standards
by Patti Defenbaugh
After losing 3 games at New Trier, the volleyball team has rebounded to improve their record to 5‑5.
The first of the two recent victories has been over Glenbrook South. Senior co‑caption Joyce Fillip was 14 of 14 serving while teammate Lauren Woods was 9 of 10 in the third game, including two aces. Stacy Walter and Stephanie Pinske combined for 13 kills in that match.
Following the upset of heavy favorite Glenbrook South, the Warriors managed to hold off Niles West 15-10 and 15-9. As a result of their last 2 wins, the Warriors are 2-0 in conference play.
A good effort by the starting line up of the Warriors has been enough to knock off the most recent opponents. "This year's starting line up varies,' states Coach Tipton. "As for right now the starting line up consists of Joyce Fillipp '87, Stephanie Pinske '88, Stacy Walter '87, Diane Raupp '88 and Sue Berger '87.' Coach Tipton says that Pinske and Fillipp are her two most valuable players.
So far the team has lost to Libertyville, New Trier, Morton, Evanston and Maine South. The Warriors still have to compete in one of the toughest tournaments in the state next to the state tournament itself. This tournament is going to take place at Glenbrook North. There are going to be 24 teams at this meet, on October 17 and 18. The Warriors will have to play at least 8 of the top 10 teams in the state.
Coach Tipton realizes that her team's biggest disadvantages are the lack of height and the lack of experience. Coach Tipton states, "Even though we aren't tall, we play good defense and we get some real outstanding scoops that demoralize our opponents. Our other weakness is inexperience and will take care of itself once we get deeper into the season."
Although the team has gotten off to a rocky start, they plan on being more impressive in the games yet to come Jenine Starky '88 states, "I'm looking forward to a good season this year. Our team shows a lot of spirit and I feel that if we work to our full potential, we should take conference." Captain Stephanie Pinske states, "If our team works together this year we will be able to reach all of our goals."
"The volleyball team really needs some fan support," added Coach Tipton. "Our next game will be on October 1, so come on out and support our team," concluded Coach Tipton.
