Survey profiles student body

by Felipe Morales

Maine West will be conducting a survey of all students to help teachers and administrators develop a better understanding of a typical Maine West student.

The survey will be given to a random group of students in a study hail or another large room. About one hundred students per class will take the survey, estimated to take about twenty minutes to answer between fifty and seventy five questions. The results, which will hopefully be distributed in November, will not contain the names of the students who took the survey.

Dr. Paul Leathem, Assistant Principal for staff, is developing the survey. Before the actual survey is distributed, the Student Council, other students or the faculty may have an opportunity to give their opinions on the questions that will be asked. This will permit Dr. Leatham to make any changes or additions.

The questions in the survey are generally divided into three categories: those concerning the academic, economic and social life of the student. It asks for the student's classes and grades, his or her general opinion of the school, how he or she feels about homework and the number of activities in which the student participated.

Questions dealing with the economic aspect of a student include plans after high school, the kind of housing in which he or she lives and the way that a student spends money. Students who are employed will be asked to list the number of hours they work.

The student profile will also present a rough idea of a student's social life by asking what kinds of people he or she is involved with, how the student feels about himself or herself and to whom does the student turn when confronted with a problem.

The answers to all these questions and many others will be carefully analyzed to produce the student profile.

Food drive helps community

by Geraly Unite

Student Council sponsored a canned food drive from September 29 to October 3. They received approximately seven hundred cans from students.

Last year they received approximately eight hundred cans and their goal this year was eighteen hundred. Unfortunately, they did not reach it. Mrs. Gail MacDonald, sponsor of Student Council, remarked, "We had expected one can from every student." Some teachers commented that the flood might have affected the drive.

The food drive began last year, when the Des Flames Youth Commission asked Student Council to conduct a food drive. Student Council decided to continue the drive this year. The seven hundred cans collected will now go to the Des Plaines Food Pantry. They will be distributed within the Des Plaines Community.

The drive was a homeroom competition. Mrs. Loebaka's homeroom won the first prize, a free doughnut breakfast, with one hundred and forty‑three cans.
"Final Dress" - V-show '86 brings audience backstage

by Sharon Kaufman

About 200 students will perform a variety of acts in this years annual V-show '86 entitled "Stage West - 'Final Dress.'"

Mr. Paul Magnusson, who has directed the show for the past four years stated, "We will present the show as if it were a final dress rehearsal. The student director and stage director of the show will appear with the mistress and master of ceremony. This different format will bring the audience backstage and show them what normally goes on backstage."

Student director of "Stage West - Final dress" is Tom Luckritz '87, and Mike Miller '87, will be conducting the V-show band. Other important directors include Mr. Gerald Hug - faculty music director and Mr. Kurt Steinhauser - technical director.

The choreographer for this year's V‑show, Jeff Mildenstein, successfully choreographed last year's V‑show and musical productions. He is head dance instructor for Gus Giordano Dance Studio in Evanston.

V‑show, the largest theatrical production of the year, involves students from all areas of the school. Students can be a part of crew, chorus, trunk or in an act. Students auditioned in front of a panel of judges that included the various directors of the show.

Mr. Magnusson commented that, "The quality of acts trying out this year are far superior to any that I've seen in past years. Every student should come to see them."

Tickets for V‑show will be available in the bookstore starting November 10. V‑show performance dates are: Thursday, November 20, Friday, November 21st, and Saturday November 22nd, at 8:00
