VOL. XXVIII, NO. 2
New grand piano benefits Maine West
by Sharon Kaufman
At the beginning of the school year, Maine Township's Board of Education along with the Music Boosters, purchased a Baldwin SD1O Concert Grand Piano.
A grand piano benefit concert was held on Sunday, October 19, in order to help pay for this new acquisition.
The Board of Education bought this piano from the Baldwin Piano Corporation. Mr. Gerald Hug said, "The Board of Education and Music Boosters decided to buy this piano because the school didn't have an adequate instrument for concerts in the auditorium. In the past, we either had to rent or borrow one."
The particular model of this piano is the largest model of Baldwin Concert Grand Pianos produced in America. It measures nine feet and one inch long and is the official piano for the Chicago Symphony. The grand piano that the Board purchased had previously been used on the floor of Orchestra Hall in Chicago. Artists and musicians from the Chicago Symphony played on this piano for about six years.
Maine West's new grand piano cost just under $18,000. The Music Boosters have been saving for the past five years in order to help the Board pay for this piano.
This piano is temporarily being stored in a practice room near the band and orchestra rooms in E- wing. However, plans are under way for constructing a permanent storage room in the auditorium for this piano, and should be completed by December. Mr. Hug stated, "We're going to protect this piano, it will last a lifetime."
The grand piano benefit Concert held in the Maine West Auditorium featured guest soloists in piano, voice and violin, along with a jazz quartet. Performers ranged from current high school students to professional teachers and performers.
Anne Farren, a sophomore at Maine West, opened up the show with a piano solo by Mendelssohn. Nancy Hinners, a voice teacher here at West, followed Anne by singing two songs from an opera. Mrs. Hinners has appeared as guest soloist in the Chicago Symphony and Cleveland Orchestras, and also has been selected as winner of the Chicago Regional Metropolitan Opera auditions.
Mr. Thomas Daniels, violinist and vocalist, performed diverse selections including songs from "South Pacific" and "Camelot". Mr. Daniels teaches violin here at Maine West and is now concert master of the Northwest Symphony Orchestra.
Karen Lindquist, pianist and former graduate of Maine West, played a variety of selections including works from Bach, Chopin, Debussy and Brahms. A jazz quartet composed of Mr. Kent Wehman, pianist: Mr. Jake Jerger, drums; Mr. Bruce Nelson, mallets: and Mr. Fran Vaupel, bass, ended the concert by performing songs from Duke Ellington and other jazz composers.
Mr. Wehman has played for shows with Jim Nabors and other celebrities, and is currently doing studio work for television and radio commercials. Mr. Jerger is the percussion instructor at Oakton Community College. Mr. Nelson has performed and traveled with Bob Hope, Andy Williams, Liza Minnelli, Liberace, and many others. He also has done work with percussion ensembles at Maine West and Maine South. Mr. Vaupel is the director of Maine West's orchestra.
