Scare up Halloween fun
at a haunted house
by Shelly Aiken

"Darkness falls across the land, the midnite hour is close at hand. The foulest stench is in the air, the funk of forty thousand years. Grizzly ghouls from every tomb are closing in to seal your home. Though you fight to stay alive, your body starts to shiver, for no mere mortal can resist" visiting a haunted house on Halloween.

Several haunted houses are open in our area this year. Lake Opeka's Terror on the Lake, Amling's Haunted House sponsored by Amling's Flower Shop, Hades Haunted House in Mt. Prospect, and the Jaycees Haunted House in Lake Villa are only a few.

Terror on the Lake on Lake Opeka is open October 23 till November 1 from 7:30 p.m. through 10:30 p.m. on weekdays, and from 7: 30 p.m. through 11:30 p.m. on weekends. It costs $3.00 for persons 12 years or older and $2.00 for persons under 12 years. But there is a discount for a group of 10 people or more; it only costs $2.00 regardless of age.

Bill, a park district employee, described the house as, "thrilling and chilling." Jenny, another employee, added, "Everyone should come and see for themselves what a good job was done this year. It's, I think, probably better than it ever has been."

Amling's Haunted House is located at 8900 West North Avenue in Melrose park. It is open October 1 through November 2 from 5: 00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. on weekdays, and 11:00 am. to 10:00 p.m. on Saturday, and 12:00 p.m. to 10: 00 p.m. on Sundays. Admission is $2.50 for all ages unless there is a group of 10 or more, then the cost is $2.00.

Rita Wywialowski, an Amling's Flower Shop employee, described the house as having "Live ghosts, goblins and scarries, carnival rides outside with video games, refreshments, prizes, costumes and much, much more." She went on, "It will be really fun and I encourage everyone to come and have a glorious time!"

Mt. Prospect's haunted house, Hades, sponsored by WBBM‑B96 radio station, is set up in the Mt. Prospect Plaza. It is open October 17 thru November 1 from 7: 00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. nightly. It is $3.50 per person admission for any age or number of people.
Kelly Morgan '87, states, "Hades was cool. I think that I liked the chainsaw room the best. I've gone to Hades every year for the last five years." Patty Flemming, a graduate of Maine West, is in her second year of working at Hades Haunted House. She commented, "This year's haunted house will be better than ever before! There will be Pepsi and pizza served every evening. We have more rooms in the house including the cave room, the crypt room and of course, the chainsaw room.

Patty also stated that mostly high school students are employed. "We do have some computer operators to run the lights, because the lights can only be run by someone who knows how, but other than that, it's pretty much all kids."

The Jaycees' Haunted House is located on Route 59 at Route 132 in Lake Villa. It is open from October 17 thru October 31. The hours are Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 7:00p.m. to 11:00p.m. The price is $2.00 for all ages and all size groups.

Raymond Kancius, publicity chairman of the Jaycees, wrote in a letter, "The haunted house is the largest project that the Jaycees sponsor. The entire Jaycee chapter membership is involved, along with 100 high school volunteers." In the letter, Raymond added, "I suggest you put this on your Autumn 'go and see' list." The haunted house raises 75% of the Jaycees annual revenue.

Mitch Kotlarz, Project Chairman, stated that 4,000 hours of volunteer labor will be required, along with thousands of dollars in order to make the haunted house successful. The project was originally designed to help young people to get involved with a useful function during the Halloween season.

Nancy Marifino of the Dempster Center, which helps to set up some of the haunted houses in the area, commented on preparing for a haunted house. "It takes a lot of work to put everything together and form a workable, believable atmosphere around the place."

But she decided that it wasn't all hard work. "It's really fun. You can let your imagination run wild and some of your worst nightmares could become one of the main attractions!" As her final word on setting up a haunted house, Nancy stated, "The kids are invaluable. We couldn't do it without them."

When, "Creatures crawl in search of blood, to terrorize y'awls neighborhood" and Halloween night arrives, don't forget to venture through one of the many haunted houses in the area. That is, if you dare.
