Fencing team begins competition

Fencing will never replace basketball as the most popular sport of the winter season, however, many people should know by now that Maine West has a very good fencing team.

Varsity fencers compete in four different events: women's foil, men's foil, epeé and sabre. Meets held between more than two teams are scored on an individual basis as well as a team basis.

For example, at the Midwest Championships last year, the girls team took first place, and two Maine West girls (Debbie Sperling '86 and Anita Baul '86) took second and third in individual competition.

This year, Coach Karen Kenyon says, 'The boys should win Midwest." Seniors Steve Chung and Art Glasgow and Sean‑O‑Chung, a junior, will fence varsity foil this year. Epee fencers Jack Sorensen '87 and Carl Ostensen '87 and sabre fencers Mike Madl and Bob Blume '87 should be able to contribute to a successful season for Maine West.

Although the girls who made last year's Midwest victory possible have all graduated, Coach Kenyon hopes that their successors (probably seniors Sue Murphy and Betty Huang, junior Deanna Donarski, and sophomore Donna Douglas) will have winning seasons.

Fencing practice starts on the third of November. The first meet will be held on November 15 at Catholic Memorial High School in Waukesha. Anyone interested in joining the team should get a physical and come to the balcony of the Spectator gym after school on November 3, concluded Coach Kenyon.
Sophomore squad posts 4-3 record

This year's sophomore football team is working in a difficult conference and has to overcome rough teams to win. So the Homecoming game was expected to be a tough game. By halftime the score was Maine West 8, Waukegan West 6, but a third quarter fumble lead to a scoring drive by Waukegan West which put them ahead 20 to 8. Maine West scored one more time only to have Waukegan West score on a 55 yard run in the last minutes of the game. The game ended with Waukegan West ahead 24 to 14.

Coaches Mr. Hutchinson and Mr. Sullins have lead the team to a record with only one game left.

Coach Hutchinson feels "Our strength is the number of good kids we have that are very coachable and are willing to learn".

The team's strong points are that they have good running backs and a good quarterback. Their defense is also very strong and shows a lot of promise.

According to Coach Hutchinson the team has many quality kids and he feels that the players should really help the varsity team next year. He expects the varsity team to do quite well next year with the addition of this team.

Coach Hutchinson has only been the Coach of the Sophomore team for three years and he feels that this year's team is one of the best teams he has ever coached.

Tennis team hopes for state

The Maine West tennis team finished the year with a 6-3 record.

The varsity team is still competing to find out who will go to state. Sharla Barone '88 and Ho Jin Choi '87 are two of the most outstanding players on the girl's varsity tennis team. Both of them are hoping to go downstate this year.

Nicole Incledon '88 comments, "The team did very well this year considering the tough competition with the other schools. Our doubles came in first against Maine South."

The team is looking forward to next year. They are hoping that the team will be stronger and better since some of the outstanding varsity players will be returning for another year.
